What makes a woman truly beautiful?
Growing up, I remember seeing how society portrays women in a way that they should all strive to look like. I remember the “perfect woman” trying to sell me beauty products on TV because “it’s what makes us beautiful.” I could never really understand the meaning - as an average girl with average looks, it stung to be reminded that I wasn’t what was considered “beautiful”. I saw every woman as beautiful - more than just the cookie-cut women that were constantly being shown. I’ve drawn women who many would not consider beautiful - some with shaved hair like in SI#3, some with muscularity like in SI#7, others plus-sized like in both SI#1 and SI#4. I circled my theme around different stereotypes or phrases I’ve heard about women. “You’d look better if you smiled more.” - SI#8. “Women should be under 120 pounds, if not, I won’t date them.” - SI#1. By synthesizing with the glowing and text, I highlight the common insults hurled at women who do not fit in with society's norms. As someone who struggles deeply with my image, I wanted to protest it, in a way, by showing off women I’ve seen who I fully believe to be beautiful. Edit: AP Score: 4 |
